It is a new year! Now is the typical time that many people aim to get healthy and fit. Walking is a great way to start moving and reduce stress. Funny enough after living in Oakland for decades, I never explored the walking trail that lies behind Montclair Village. My neighbor Asha, who grew up in Detroit was the one who took me for my premier tour. Here is Asha and her son Jalen enjoying the sunny and crisp winter weather.
To get to the trail from Montclair Village, walk up LaSalle Avenue (above or east of Mountain Blvd). and where the street dead ends you will find stairs that lead up to the trail.

That's how I walk back from the village sometimes. Besides the stairs, if you've got a bike or stroller or whatever, you can go left, past the tunnel and up a slope and then double back to get on the trail, too.
The trail follows the old rail right of way (it crossed Lake Temescal on a trestle). I think one of the signs along the early part of the path may have a bit of history on it.
I'm wondering if anyone may know of a place in Montclair, or near by, that would be good as a writing room?
A friend and I have summer writing projects and seek a place 2 hours a week.
Unfortunately, the super cozy Montclair library is closed til 2010!!
Any suggestion would be helpful.
Thank you,
Melanie
Never fear, the Montclair Library will reopen Monday, July 6, 2009 -- it was closed a long time, but not till 2010!
